Sail Locker

A designated storage space aboard a vessel where sails and related equipment are kept when not in use.

A sail locker is an essential feature on many sailing vessels, particularly those designed for long voyages or competitive sailing. It is typically located below deck to ensure the sails are protected from the elements and to maintain the vessel’s balance and stability. The sail locker is often positioned in the bow (forepeak) or another area where it does not interfere with the crew’s movement or the operation of the vessel. Inside, it may include hooks, racks, or shelves to keep sails organised and prevent them from becoming tangled or damaged. 

Sails are vital components of a sailing vessel, and their proper care and storage are critical for maintaining their performance and longevity. The sail locker may also house additional equipment such as sail ties, repair kits, spare lines, and other rigging essentials. On larger vessels, the sail locker may be spacious enough to allow crew members to work inside, inspecting or repairing sails as needed. Proper ventilation is often a feature of a well-designed sail locker to prevent moisture build-up, which could lead to mould or mildew on the sails.
