Sail Ties

Short lengths of line or webbing used to secure a lowered or furled sail.

They keep a mainsail gathered on the boom or restrain another sail for temporary stowage so that it does not fill with wind or obstruct the deck. Traditional sail ties may also be called gaskets.

Ties should be secure but not tightened in a way that damages sailcloth, battens or fittings. They are not a substitute for the sail’s designed reefing or furling system when the sail remains exposed to working loads, and loose ties should be stowed so that they cannot wash away or foul equipment.
