Oilskins

Waterproof outer clothing worn to protect crew from rain, spray and water on deck.

Traditional oilskins were fabric treated with oil, while modern marine waterproofs use coated or laminated synthetic materials. A typical set consists of a jacket and trousers or salopettes designed to allow movement while reducing water penetration and wind chill.

Features may include high collars, adjustable cuffs, reflective panels, drainage and reinforced seats and knees. Oilskins form part of a clothing system with suitable base and insulating layers, boots and any required personal flotation equipment; waterproof clothing alone does not prevent cold stress or provide buoyancy.
