The effective point through which the combined underwater force resisting sideways motion is considered to act.
A performance chart showing predicted or measured boat speed for different wind angles and wind strengths.
The force opposing a vessel’s movement through the water.
A deck exposed to the outside environment and capable of being subjected to rain, spray or boarding seas. Openings, vents, fittings and drainage on a weather deck must maintain the vessel’s required weathertight integrity. Loose equipment also needs securing against wind and vessel motion.
A ventilated locker intended for stowing wet clothing or equipment while allowing drainage. It separates damp gear from dry accommodation and should have a drain to a suitable point rather than an enclosed bilge. Ventilation, cleaning and secure stowage help prevent odour, corrosion and blocked drainage.
The actual load carried or expected in normal service by a component or system. It must remain within the relevant working load limit after allowing for lead angles, dynamic effects, wear and the weakest component. Working load is not the same as breaking load or proof load.
A condition in which a vessel’s stern draught is greater relative to its bow draught than the chosen even-keel reference. It can result from loading, fuel distribution, speed or flooding and affects handling, resistance, propeller immersion and clearances. The amount of trim is assessed from forward and aft draughts or a stability calculation.
A light line attached to an anchor or underwater object to help release or recover it from an obstructed direction. For an anchor it is commonly secured near the crown and may lead to a buoy or back aboard. It can foul other craft, the anchor or propeller, so its use and marking require judgement…
A device that converts one form of energy or physical quantity into another usable signal. Marine transducers include echo-sounder elements converting electrical pulses to sound and back, and sensors for speed, pressure or temperature. Installation, calibration, fouling and acoustic or electrical interference affect accuracy.
