Trinity House

The General Lighthouse Authority responsible for aids to navigation in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar.

Trinity House provides and maintains lighthouses, buoys, beacons and related aids in its area and inspects local aids maintained by other authorities. It is also a maritime charity and a Deep Sea Pilotage Authority.

Its statutory aids-to-navigation role is funded through the General Lighthouse Fund and coordinated with the Northern Lighthouse Board and Irish Lights. Mariners remain responsible for using current charts, notices and navigation warnings.

Responsibilities: Trinity House is responsible for maintaining lighthouses, buoys, beacons, and other navigation aids. It ensures mariners’ safe passage along the coasts and in British territorial waters within its jurisdiction.
Additional Role: Besides managing navigational aids, Trinity House provides training and welfare for mariners and conducts inspections for vessel safety standards.
Established: Trinity House was established in 1514 by Royal Charter and has a long history serving Britain’s maritime needs.
