Life Jacket
A buoyant, wearable safety device designed to keep a person afloat in the water and reduce the risk of drowning.
A life jacket, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD), is an essential piece of safety equipment used in boating and other water-based activities. It is designed to provide buoyancy and keep the wearer’s head above water, even if they are unconscious. Life jackets are typically made from foam or inflatable materials that trap air to provide flotation.
There are different types of life jackets, including inherently buoyant foam jackets, inflatable models that require manual or automatic activation, and hybrid versions that combine both materials. Regulations often dictate the type of life jacket required based on the activity, water conditions, and the wearer’s age and size.
Life jackets are mandatory in many maritime environments, particularly for children, non-swimmers, and during emergency situations. They are brightly coloured, often with reflective strips and a whistle attached to aid in visibility and rescue. Proper fit and maintenance are crucial to ensure effectiveness, as a poorly fitted or damaged life jacket may not provide adequate buoyancy.
