Global Forecast System (GFS)
A weather model developed by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) that provides global weather forecasts by simulating the atmosphere using mathematical equations and data from various sources.
The Global Forecast System (GFS) is a numerical weather prediction model that is used to produce forecasts for weather conditions globally. Developed by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in the United States, the GFS uses complex mathematical equations to simulate the atmosphere and predict how it will evolve over time. This model takes in data from various sources such as satellites, weather stations, and buoys to create forecasts for parameters like temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and pressure. The GFS is run multiple times a day and provides forecasts up to 16 days in advance, although the accuracy tends to decrease the further into the future the forecast goes. Despite this limitation, the GFS is a valuable tool for meteorologists, researchers, and various industries that rely on weather forecasts for planning and decision-making.
