Wight
A Met Office Shipping Forecast sea area in the English Channel south of central southern England.
Named after the Isle of Wight, it lies between Dover to the east and Portland to the west and includes waters well beyond the Solent.
It should not be described as only the Solent or waters immediately around the island. Published Met Office coordinates define its limits.
After the Isle of Wight (Old English “Wiht”), Wight sees southwest winds of Force 4–6 and confused seas in the Solent’s strong tidal races. An unprecedented calm during the 1976 drought highlighted its normally dynamic tidal currents.
