Sportbootführerschein (SBF)
A German boating licence required for operating recreational motorboats and sailing vessels above certain power or length limits in German waters.
The Sportbootführerschein (SBF) is a mandatory licence for recreational boaters in Germany, covering both inland and coastal waters. It is divided into two main categories: the Sportbootführerschein Binnen (SBF Binnen) for inland waterways and the Sportbootführerschein See (SBF See) for coastal waters. The SBF Binnen is required for operating motorboats with an engine power exceeding 15 horsepower (except on the Rhine, where the limit is 5 horsepower), while the SBF See is necessary for navigating in maritime areas beyond inland waters.
To obtain the licence, applicants must pass a theoretical exam covering navigation, maritime law, safety procedures, and weather knowledge, as well as a practical test demonstrating boat handling skills. The Sportbootführerschein is internationally recognised and is often required for chartering vessels in Germany and other countries. Additional licences, such as the Sportküstenschifferschein (SKS) or higher-level certificates, may be needed for more advanced sailing or offshore cruising.
