Spar

Spar refers to any long, sturdy pole or beam used on a ship to support sails, rigging, or other equipment. Spars are typically made of wood, metal, or composite materials and are essential to a ship’s rigging system. There are several types of spars on a vessel, each serving different functions in relation to the sails and mast.

Common types of spars include:

• Mast: The vertical spar that supports the sails and rigging.

• Boom: A horizontal spar attached to the foot (bottom) of a sail, used to extend and control it.

• Yard: A horizontal spar from which square sails are suspended.

• Gaff: A spar that extends the top edge of a sail, often used with gaff-rigged sails.

• Bowsprit: A spar extending forward from the ship’s bow, used to anchor the forestays (ropes supporting the mast).
