The upward movement of water or swell against a fixed object or shoreline.
This is often noticed where waves lift against a harbour wall, quay, rock face or steep beach. It can affect how a vessel lies alongside, how lines take the load, and how easy it is for crew to step ashore. Strong upward movement may cause surging, snatching on mooring lines or sudden changes in fender pressure. When berthing or lying near hard structures, it is worth allowing for this movement in the placement of fenders and the way lines are led.
