RYA Training Chart
A specialised, non-navigational chart produced by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) for teaching and practising navigation and chartwork skills in a controlled learning environment.
The RYA Training Chart is a critical tool used in maritime education, particularly in courses designed to teach navigation, passage planning, and pilotage. These charts are not intended for actual navigation at sea but are instead created specifically for training purposes. They often depict fictional or modified areas, combining features such as coastlines, buoys, ports, and hazards that allow students to practise interpreting chart symbols, plotting courses, and calculating tidal streams. By using a standardised training chart, instructors can ensure consistency in teaching and assessment across different courses and locations.
RYA Training Charts are typically used in conjunction with other teaching materials, such as tidal stream atlases, almanacs, and plotting instruments, to simulate real-world scenarios. They are an essential component of RYA navigation courses, including Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper, and Yachtmaster programmes. The charts are designed to challenge students with realistic scenarios, such as avoiding hazards, planning safe routes, and accounting for tidal effects, without the risks associated with using real-world charts. This allows learners to build confidence and competence in a safe and controlled environment before applying their skills on the water.
