Head to Wind
Pointing the bow directly into the wind.
This position is used when hoisting, lowering or reefing sails, because it reduces pressure in the sail and makes handling easier. A sailing vessel may lose steerage if held there for too long, so the manoeuvre needs timing and control. It is also used briefly during a tack as the bow passes through the wind. Engine use, boat speed and sea room all affect how well the vessel maintains control.
