Gelcoat
A specialised resin-based coating applied to the surface of fibreglass boats to provide a smooth, durable, and protective outer layer.
Gelcoat is a component in the construction and maintenance of fibreglass vessels, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes. It is typically made from polyester or epoxy resin, combined with pigments to give it colour, and is applied to the mould before the fibreglass layers are laid down. This ensures that the outer surface of the boat is smooth and glossy, enhancing its appearance and providing a barrier against water, UV rays, and minor abrasions. The gelcoat layer is relatively thin, usually only a few millimetres thick, but it plays a vital role in protecting the underlying fibreglass structure from the harsh marine environment, including exposure to saltwater, sunlight, and physical impacts.
Over time, gelcoat can become scratched, faded, or chalky due to prolonged exposure to the elements, and regular maintenance is required to keep it in good condition. This may involve polishing, waxing, or, in more severe cases, sanding and reapplying gelcoat to restore its protective properties and appearance. Proper care of the gelcoat is essential for maintaining the overall integrity and longevity of a fibreglass boat, as any damage to this outer layer can lead to water ingress and potential structural issues.
