Danbuoy

A floating marker pole, often equipped with a flag, light, or buoyancy aid, used in maritime settings to indicate a specific location, such as a man-overboard position or a fishing net.

A danbuoy is a vital piece of equipment in marine operations, designed to serve as a highly visible marker on the water. It typically consists of a long pole or staff attached to a buoyant base, ensuring it remains upright when deployed. The top of the pole often features a brightly coloured flag, reflective material, or even a light to enhance visibility in various weather and lighting conditions. Some danbuoys are also equipped with radar reflectors to ensure they can be detected by vessels using radar systems.

In a man-overboard situation, a danbuoy is thrown into the water to mark the exact location of the incident, allowing the crew to return to the spot quickly and efficiently. This is particularly critical in rough seas or poor visibility, where losing sight of a person in the water can happen in seconds. In addition to its use in emergencies, danbuoys are also employed by fishermen to mark the position of nets, traps, or other gear, ensuring they can locate and retrieve their equipment later.

Modern danbuoys are often collapsible or designed for easy stowage, making them practical for use on a wide range of vessels, from small recreational boats to large commercial ships. Their simplicity, reliability, and effectiveness make them an indispensable tool for enhancing safety and operational efficiency on the water.
