Code Zero
A lightweight, high-performance sail designed for close-reaching angles, typically used in light wind conditions to maximise boat speed.
A Code Zero is a specialised sail that bridges the gap between a traditional genoa and an asymmetric spinnaker. It is designed for use in light to moderate winds, typically between 5 and 15 knots, and is optimised for sailing at angles between close-hauled and a broad reach. Unlike a conventional spinnaker, which is fuller and designed for deep downwind sailing, a Code Zero has a flatter shape, allowing it to generate lift and drive the boat forward efficiently at tighter angles.
The sail is usually made from lightweight nylon or laminate materials to maintain its shape while remaining easy to handle. It is often deployed using a furling system, making it convenient to set and douse quickly. The Code Zero is particularly popular in racing and performance cruising, as it provides a significant speed advantage in light air conditions where a standard headsail may not generate enough power.
While originally developed for high-performance racing yachts, Code Zero sails are now widely used on cruising boats as well, offering versatility and improved performance in variable wind conditions.
