Chop

Short, steep and closely spaced waves that create an irregular, uncomfortable sea.

Chop often develops when wind acts over a limited fetch, when wind opposes a tidal stream or current, or when waves are reflected and disturbed around a headland, harbour entrance or sea wall. It may be locally severe even when the individual waves are not especially high.

Because the waves are close together, a vessel may pitch, slam or take spray repeatedly. A safer or more comfortable response may involve reducing speed or altering course, while still accounting for traffic, depth, sea room and the effect of the new heading on the vessel.
