Anchor Roller
A fitting mounted on a boat’s bow designed to guide, support, and secure the anchor and its rode during deployment and retrieval.
An anchor roller is an essential piece of hardware installed on the bow of a vessel, typically at the stem or near the bow pulpit. It is designed to facilitate the smooth deployment and retrieval of the anchor and its rode (the rope or chain attached to the anchor). The roller consists of a sturdy frame, often made from stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials, and incorporates one or more rollers or wheels. These rollers reduce friction and prevent damage to the anchor rode as it moves over the bow.
The anchor roller serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it acts as a guide, ensuring the anchor is deployed and retrieved in a controlled manner, preventing the chain or rope from tangling or snagging. Secondly, it provides a secure resting place for the anchor when stowed, keeping it stable and preventing it from swinging or damaging the hull. Many anchor rollers also include a locking mechanism or pin to hold the anchor firmly in place during transit.
The design of an anchor roller varies depending on the type of anchor and the size of the vessel. Some are designed to accommodate specific anchor shapes, such as plough or claw anchors, while others are more universal. Proper installation and maintenance of the anchor roller are crucial to ensure its functionality and longevity, as it is exposed to harsh marine conditions and constant mechanical stress.
