An anchor buoy is a vital piece of equipment used in marine operations to mark the position of an anchor on the seabed. It is typically a brightly coloured, highly visible float attached to the anchor by a line or rope. The primary purpose of an anchor buoy is to help the vessel’s crew or other nearby boats identify the exact location of the anchor, ensuring that the anchor is not accidentally fouled or disturbed by other vessels or marine activities. It also aids in the retrieval of the anchor, especially in situations where the anchor may become stuck or difficult to recover. By following the buoy line, the crew can more easily locate and free the anchor.

Anchor buoys are particularly useful in crowded harbours, marinas, or areas with complex seabed conditions, where multiple vessels may be anchoring in close proximity. They can also serve as a visual indicator for other vessels to avoid the area around the anchor, reducing the risk of entanglement or collision. In some cases, the buoy may also carry additional information, such as the vessel’s name or registration number, further aiding in identification.

While anchor buoys are not always necessary in every anchoring situation, they are a valuable tool for maintaining safe and efficient anchoring practices, particularly in busy or challenging waters.
