Nautical Terms & TerminologyUnderstanding the language of the marine world is like trying to learn a pirate’s secret code while juggling fish. Let us explain why a sheet isn’t for your bed, why “heave ho” doesn’t mean throw up (most of the time), and why “dead reckoning” is surprisingly less ominous than it sounds.
Why do we have tides?Have you ever wondered what causes the tides? Check out this video, which introduces the forces that create the tides we experience on Earth.
What causes our weather?A video introducing the drivers behind our weather, part of our RYA Day Skipper & RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster® Offshore theory courses.

An RYA practical course introducing take-off and short controlled flights using a wing-powered hydrofoil board. Training covers foil equipment, safe carrying and launching, wing power, stance, take-off, touchdown and recovery. It assumes suitable wingsurfing and board skills and requires adequate space, depth, weather and protective equipment.
An RYA practical course consolidating wing control, board handling and independent non-foiling wingsurfing. It develops stronger upwind and downwind progress, transitions, stance, power control and equipment awareness. The course prepares participants for more demanding conditions or wingfoiling, but foil-specific take-off and flight remain separate skills.
An RYA advanced wingfoiling course developing continuous flight, control and linked changes of direction. It refines take-off, ride height, speed, upwind and downwind angles, touchdowns and recovery over longer flights. Competence remains equipment- and condition-specific, and safe separation and adequate water depth continue to govern operation.
An RYA practical sail-cruising course introducing the skills needed to be a useful and safe yacht crew member. Training covers steering, sail handling, ropework, lookout, personal safety, emergency actions, living aboard and contributing during a short passage. It is a crew-level course rather than a skipper qualification and does not independently certify navigation or command…
An RYA practical foiling course introducing controlled take-off and the first short flights on a windsurfing. Training develops equipment knowledge, safe launching, stance, power control, take-off, touchdown and recovery while managing separation from other water users. Suitable weather, equipment and prerequisite board or boat skills are necessary; the award does not imply sustained flight in…
An RYA progression course developing more efficient and independent windsurfing across a wider range of conditions. It consolidates stance, steering, tacking, gybing, upwind ability, equipment set-up and safety while preparing for planing or advanced modules. The exact non-planing or planing pathway should be confirmed because the scheme distinguishes intermediate skill levels.

Instruction uses age-appropriate equipment and supervised sessions to develop rig handling, board control, safety and decision-making at the stated progression level. The stage records demonstrated skills in the course conditions rather than unrestricted competence;…
The RYA Youth Windsurfing Scheme Stage 3 practical course, consolidating sailing directions, manoeuvres and self-reliance. Instruction uses age-appropriate equipment and supervised sessions to develop rig handling, board control, safety and decision-making at the stated progression level. The stage records demonstrated skills in the course conditions rather than unrestricted competence; progression depends on ability, weather and…
The RYA Youth Windsurfing Scheme Stage 2 practical course, developing steering, turning and greater independent control.
