Nominal Range of a Light (M)

The luminous range of a light in a homogeneous atmosphere with meteorological visibility of 10 nautical miles.

On a nautical chart it is stated in nautical miles, using M after the number within the complete light characteristic. For example, 12M states a nominal range of 12 nautical miles; the distance at which the light is actually seen also depends on atmospheric conditions and geographic range.
