Shannon
A Met Office Shipping Forecast sea area in the Atlantic west of Ireland.
Named after the River Shannon, it lies west of Fastnet and Irish Sea, south of Rockall and east of the open Atlantic boundary within the forecast grid.
It is not confined to the river mouth. Current published coordinates define the precise offshore area.
From the Shannon Estuary (Gaelic “Sionainn”), Shannon sees west to southwest winds of Force 4–6 and moderate seas, with occasional strong winter gusts. The 1822 storm surge flooded Limerick, prompting improvements to estuary defenses.
