Vessel Traffic Service (VTS)
A shore-based system that monitors and manages vessel movements in busy or hazardous waterways to enhance safety, efficiency, and environmental protection.
Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is an internationally recognised system operated by maritime authorities to regulate and assist vessel movements in congested or high-risk areas such as ports, straits, and busy coastal waters. Using radar, Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), VHF radio communication, and other surveillance technologies, VTS centres provide real-time traffic monitoring, navigational advice, and collision avoidance guidance. Participation in VTS may be mandatory or voluntary, depending on the region and the type of vessel.
VTS services are generally classified into three categories: Information Service (providing navigational and traffic-related information), Navigational Assistance Service (offering guidance to vessels in difficult conditions), and Traffic Organisation Service (managing vessel movements to prevent congestion and conflicts). The system enhances maritime safety by reducing the risk of collisions, groundings, and environmental incidents while also improving traffic flow and port efficiency. VTS operations are typically governed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and national maritime authorities.
