Flaking a Line
Laying a line in long, orderly turns so it remains clear and can run out without tangling.
The turns are normally placed back and forth on a clean deck or in a suitable container, with the end required first positioned for a clear lead. This is particularly useful for heaving lines, towlines, halyards and other rope that may need to pay out quickly.
No person should stand inside a coil or bight, and hands and clothing must be kept clear when a loaded line begins to run. The line should also be protected from grit, sharp edges and contamination.
