Wheel

A steering control used to turn the rudder or drive system.

This allows the helmsman or helm to control the direction of the vessel. On yachts, a single wheel may be mounted in the cockpit, while twin wheels can give better visibility along either side of the boat when heeled. The response depends on speed through the water, rudder flow, propeller effect and sea conditions. Smooth steering helps maintain course and reduces unnecessary drag.
