Autopilot
An automatic steering system that controls a vessel’s rudder or steering mechanism to maintain a selected heading or course reference.
Depending on the installation, an autopilot may steer to a compass heading, wind angle or navigation input. It does not navigate independently, detect every hazard or remove the need for a proper lookout. Its performance and the vessel’s position must be monitored, and the person in charge must be ready to change promptly to hand steering.
