Mainsheet Traveller (Traveler)

An adjustable fitting or car that moves the mainsheet’s effective deck attachment across or along the vessel.

On many yachts the car runs on a transverse track and changes the boom’s lateral position without the same change in sheet tension that would occur by easing the mainsheet. This allows angle of attack and leech tension to be adjusted more independently, although the exact effect depends on geometry and other controls.

Traveller cars, stops, control lines and track fastenings carry high loads. Adjustments should use the designed tackles and cleats with hands clear of pinch points, and the system should be inspected for loose fasteners, worn bearings, damaged end stops and uncontrolled movement.
