Broad Reach

A point of sail with the true wind coming from aft of the beam but not directly astern.

It lies between a beam reach and a run. Exact angle ranges vary between teaching schemes and vessel types, while the apparent wind experienced aboard normally lies farther forward than the true-wind direction and changes with boat speed.

Sails are generally eased compared with an upwind course, but trim depends on the rig and apparent wind. A broad reach can be fast, yet rolling, surfing, heavy helm or accidental-gybe risk may still arise, so it is not inherently the safest or most comfortable point of sail.

Beam Reach

The wind is coming across the side of the boat. This is usually quick, stable, and easy to feel.
