Bowline

A knot that forms a fixed loop which normally does not tighten when loaded.

A correctly dressed bowline is widely used to form an eye around a suitable object or to provide a loop in the end of a line. It is often relatively easy to untie after a steady load, although this depends on rope material, loading and the knot’s condition.

A bowline can loosen, spill or capsize under cyclic loading, flogging, ring loading or unsuitable loading direction, and it reduces the rope’s strength. A stopper, secured tail or different knot may be required for the application; it should not be assumed suitable for towing, personal support or every high-load task.
