Sextant
An optical instrument used to measure the angle between two visible objects.
At sea it is commonly used to measure a celestial body’s altitude above the horizon, but it can also measure angles between terrestrial objects. Index error and relevant sight corrections must be applied; never look directly at the Sun through the instrument without suitable, correctly positioned filters.
