Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB)

The Northern Lighthouse Board is a maritime organisation responsible for maintaining lighthouses and navigation aids in Scotland and the Isle of Man.

The Northern Lighthouse Board ensures the safety of mariners navigating the waters around Scotland and the Isle of Man, managing over 200 lighthouses and numerous buoys and beacons in some of the most challenging waters in the British Isles. Established in 1786, the Board manages a network of lighthouses, buoys, and other aids to navigation.

The Northern Lighthouse Board is one of the three General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) in the UK and Ireland, alongside Irish Lights in Ireland and Trinity House in England & Wales. Together, they manage all navigation aids in British and Irish waters, ensuring safety and efficiency in maritime navigation.
