Ease Out

Letting a rope or control line out gradually.

This is used most often with sheets to reduce sail trim, but it can also apply to mooring lines and other running rigging. On a sailing vessel it allows the sail to move away from the centreline and match a wider wind angle. The action should be controlled so the sail does not flog heavily or the line run free. Small adjustments often give better results than large, sudden releases.
