Dip the Ensign
Lowering the national flag briefly as a salute.
This traditional courtesy is used between vessels, with the flag raised again after the salute is acknowledged. It is normally carried out by lowering the ensign part way, waiting for the other vessel to respond, then re-hoisting it. The custom is seen more often in formal or traditional settings than in everyday leisure sailing. It should be done neatly and with awareness of the vessel’s flag etiquette.
