Close Reach

A point of sail with the apparent wind forward of the beam but far enough abaft the bow for the sails to draw without close-hauled trim.

It lies between close-hauled and a beam reach. Sails are eased somewhat from close-hauled, and many vessels make good speed with less heel and leeway than when sailing as high as possible.

Exact angles vary with vessel, rig, sail and whether true or apparent wind is quoted, so fixed figures such as 60–80 degrees are only approximate. Sail trim should follow telltales and boat response.

The wind is coming across the side of the boat. This is usually quick, stable, and easy to feel.
