Binnacle

The housing or stand that supports the vessel’s compass.

This is usually positioned where the helm can read it easily, often near the wheel or steering position. It may also carry lighting, guard rails or nearby navigation instruments. The compass should be protected from magnetic interference caused by tools, speakers, electronics or metal objects placed too close. A clear, reliable compass position supports steering and navigation, especially when visibility or electronic systems are limited.
