Anchor Buoy

A floating marker connected by a buoyed line to an anchor or its crown to show the anchor’s position.

It can help identify where the anchor lies and, when correctly arranged, may provide a trip line for freeing an anchor that is fouled. The buoy and line must have suitable size, strength and length for the depth and tidal range.

An anchor buoy can itself create a fouling or collision hazard, particularly in crowded anchorages or where boats may pass between the buoy and vessel. Its use should suit local practice and conditions, and the trip line should not be mistaken for a lifting point unless designed for that load.
