A seasonal circulation pattern involving a marked change in prevailing wind direction.

It is especially important around the Indian Ocean and parts of Asia and can produce distinct wet and dry seasons. The term describes the circulation rather than a single rainstorm; onset, strength and associated winds and swell vary by region and year.
