Hydrodynamics
The study of liquids in motion and the forces associated with their flow.
In sailing it helps explain hull resistance, wave-making, keel and rudder lift, and the behaviour of planing or foiling craft. Forces depend on speed, shape, immersion and water conditions; an effect demonstrated in smooth water may change substantially in waves or disturbed flow.
