Angle of Attack
The angle between a foil’s chord line and the direction of the incoming flow.
For a sail the relevant flow is the apparent wind; for a keel or rudder it is the local water flow. Changing the angle alters lift and drag, and an excessive angle can cause separation and stall; sheet angle or rudder angle alone does not always equal the effective angle of attack.
