Tacking Downwind
Making downwind progress on alternating broad-reaching legs joined by gybes.
The phrase describes the zigzag course rather than turning the bow through the wind at each change. Some boats achieve better downwind progress this way than on a direct run, but the choice depends on wind, waves, sail plan, obstacles and the boat’s performance.
