Roach
The area of sail extending beyond a straight line drawn between the head and clew along the leech.
A positive roach adds area and is commonly supported by battens on a mainsail. Its size affects sail shape and clearance from the backstay or other rigging; a hollow leech curves inside the straight reference line rather than adding positive roach.
