Square Sail
A sail suspended from a horizontal yard and set across the vessel’s fore-and-aft centreline.
The yard can be braced to change the sail’s angle to the wind; it is not fixed perpendicular to the wind. Square sails are characteristic of traditional square-rigged vessels and are generally less effective close to the wind than modern fore-and-aft rigs.
