Close Reach

A point of sail where the wind is coming from forward of the beam, typically about 60° to 80° off the bow. It is one of the fastest and most efficient points of sail, as the sails generate a good balance of lift and forward drive.

On a close reach, the sails should be trimmed in fairly tightly, but not as close as when sailing close-hauled. The mainsail and headsail should be eased just enough to maintain smooth airflow without luffing. Steering accurately is important, as sailing too close to the wind will cause the sails to flap, while bearing away too far will reduce efficiency.

Many yachts perform at their best on a close reach, making it a popular point of sail for both cruising and racing.

Beam Reach

The wind is coming across the side of the boat. This is usually quick, stable, and easy to feel.
