ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic Model (ICON) (ICON)
A global and regional numerical weather and climate modelling framework using an icosahedral triangular grid and nonhydrostatic dynamics.
ICON was developed through German research and meteorological institutions and is used operationally by the German Weather Service, with global and nested regional configurations. Its grid avoids the severe polar convergence of a conventional latitude–longitude mesh.
ICON is a model family, not a single-resolution forecast. Dataset source, configuration, run, valid time, ensemble status and post-processing determine how output should be interpreted.
