Stand by to Gybe

A preparatory command telling the crew to get ready for an intended gybe.

The warning allows crew to prepare sheets, preventers and other controls, check that the working area is clear and move away from the path of the boom and mainsheet. Crew should acknowledge when their stations are ready.

It precedes the command or warning used as the vessel actually turns and the boom crosses. Wording varies between boats, but the preparatory and execution calls should remain distinct and the manoeuvre should not begin until traffic, sea room and crew readiness have been checked.
