Spray Hood
A folding or fixed canopy over a companionway or forward cockpit area that deflects spray, wind and rain.
Often called a dodger in North American usage, it normally consists of fabric and transparent panels supported by a metal frame. Its coverage, handholds, windows and ability to fold vary, and it may connect to a cockpit enclosure or bimini.
A spray hood improves shelter but is not a watertight closure or necessarily a load-rated handrail. Fabric, stitching, windows, frame sockets and visibility require inspection, and it should be lowered or secured as the design and conditions require.
