Speed Made Good

The speed achieved along the intended track over the ground.

This accounts for the effect of tide, leeway and the vessel’s actual movement relative to the planned route. A boat may show good speed through the water while making poor progress towards the destination if it is being set sideways. This measure helps the skipper assess whether the passage plan is working and whether course or speed should be adjusted. It is closely linked to estimated arrival times and progress monitoring.
