Radar Reflector

A passive structure intended to increase the strength of radar energy returned from a vessel or object.

Corner reflectors and other geometries redirect incident radar energy towards its source and are fitted particularly to small craft or low-reflectivity structures. Performance depends on frequency band, orientation, elevation, heel, mounting height and obstruction by rig or equipment.

A reflector can improve detectability but cannot guarantee that another radar or operator will acquire the target in sea or rain clutter. Installation should follow its tested orientation and height, and active radar target enhancers are a separate powered technology.
