Painter

A line secured at or near the bow of a dinghy or other small boat for towing or making fast.

The painter provides a ready means of securing the boat to a vessel, pontoon, mooring or shore fitting and may be used for towing when the boat and attachment point are suitable. It should be long and strong enough for its intended use without creating excessive loose line.

When underway, the painter must be secured so that it cannot trail into the water and foul a propeller, rudder or centreboard. Its bow attachment and the condition of the line should be checked, particularly before towing or leaving the dinghy unattended.
