Leg
One section of a route or passage between two defined points.
In a route made from waypoints, each leg begins at one waypoint and ends at the next. It has an intended direction and distance, and may also include a planned speed, estimated time and navigational constraints.
Monitoring progress along a leg involves comparing the vessel’s observed position and movement with the plan. Altering course at the end of a leg should be anticipated and checked against hazards, traffic, depth and the vessel’s turning characteristics.
